Although Ge Kai had prepared himself before coming here, he was still shocked to see the magical medicinal herb garden for himself.
He had to hold himself back from digging out the heavenly treasures beneath his feet with his bare hands.
Taking advantage of Ge Kai's successful diversion, the groundhog stealthily sneaked into the hut without making a sound. As it was part of the Shadow Kill Pavillion, stealth had become a part of its nature.
As soon as it entered the hut, it breathed a heavy sigh of relief.
The groundhog had the audacity to think that it was already out of danger. Before it could take a second breath, the paintings all around it started to emit a heaven shaking aura.
At the very first instance that the aura appeared, the groundhog felt a sense of mortal danger and it tried to retreat out of the hut but to no avail. Its body was no longer its own.
It wanted to plead but how could it beg for mercy from the paintings. Locked in place the only thing it could do was wait for its death.
The groundhog wanted to scream to the heavens for their unjust distribution of luck.
While Ge Kai was happily chatting with Zhang Jian, he had been captured by some paintings hung on the wall and was about to be given a nameless death.
It was only a matter of seconds before the groundhog burst into blood mist and scattered into the air. There was no indication that a groundhog had once succeeded in invading a terrible monster's lair.
Its death was nothing more than an experiment to Ge Kai. In fact, Ge Kai didn't need to take part himself in this job but he still came because he wanted to see for himself, the dreadfulness of Zhang Jian which he definitely knew now.
As soon as the groundhog had died, a jade talisman hanging across his neck had started to vibrate furiously before shattering which almost made Ge Kai cough blood. He definitely suffered some internal injuries. This talisman was hidden inside his shabby robes which helped him stay away from suspicion.
The force with which the talisman shattered was a direct indication of how gruesome its death had been. Even the part of its soul that resided in the talisman was blown apart into smithereens.
Despite the terror of Zhang Jian that had invaded Ge Kai's very soul, a cunning smile appeared on his face. Despite his shabby appearance, that grim smile made him look even more devious and calculating.
Unknown to the groundhog, Ge Kai had been the one to throw it into the jaws of death in order to save himself from the same fate. Ge Kai had known that a peerless master would definitely have some tricks up his sleeves no matter how lowkey he might have appeared to be.
Ge Kai calculated the time starting from when the groundhog sneaked in and the time of its death and was shocked out of his skin to find that it had not even been more than 20 seconds before the groundhog departed from this world.
An expert on the level of groundhog could not survive even 20 seconds in Zhang Jian's house.
"Looks like it's true. Either this hut is the residence of not just one terrible monster at the same level as Zhang Jian or Zhang Jian has managed to set up countless heaven defying traps in his hut to kill off any invader as soon as they show up. He really doesn't make this job easy."
Ge Kai knew that infiltration was not going to be the solution to his problems and decided to retreat before he was found out. Ge Kai's experiment had reached its conclusion; it was only that the groundhog who had been one of his loyal servants had to die in order to do that.
"I hope you treat her well. She is an absolute gem. I can only pray to the heavens that I can manage to find someone at her level who can take over my legace in this lifetime."
Saying that, Ge Kai coughed up some blood. He was finally unable to hold back the aftermath of his injury due to the shattering explosion of the groundhog's life jade.
It appeared to Zhang Jian that the shabby old man was quite pitiful for not even finding an apprentice as bad as Wang Yan. It was not as if geniuses had stopped being born. Seeing how upset the old man looked since he was practically coughing up blood, Zhang Jian wished for him to find a legacy apprentice soon.
Before Zhang Jian or Wang Yan could say any words of consolation the old man retreated while practically sprinting away from them.
Zhang Jian looked at the place where the old man vanished and the looked at Wang Yan who now stood as proud as a peacock. The old man had been praising her non-stop which seemed to have gotten to her head.
Zhang Jian couldn't stand the sight and knocked on her forehead slightly before saying "Don't even dare to think that you are as good as that old man described. That old man was probably delusional. Work harder to improve yourself. Right now you are only so-so."
"Huh! It's only you who seems to think that I am useless. If I was only so-so then why did you teach me your cultivation technique at all. You might be my master but you don't have to belittle me every single time."
Of course she could only think like that in her mind and couldn't voice these thoughts at all. After Zhang Jian had treated her badly in front of Lin Xi, even the obedient Wang Yan had developed a rebellious streak.

Xiao Luo had rushed day and night for two days straight without stopping for a second throughout in order to reach a secluded residence. The door of the residence was obscured by heavy branches arching downwards from sky high trees. The adjoining canopies of these trees were so huge that they had blotted out the sun making the forest look quite dark and musty.
The door opened and an old man came out with calm and unhurried steps before stopping in front of Xiao Luo.
The old man started cursing Xiao Luo in a loud voice and a face that was bursting with anger. After he had overcome the fit of cursing, the old man seemed to have calmed down.
"You better have an explanation for yourself!" The old man thundered in a voice so loud that the birds were in a frenzy all over the forest.
Xiao Luo acted as if he was a little kid who had done something wrong.
"I know that the Purple sect is at fault here but Old man Wu, give me some face and let's not air out dirty laundry in public. I have come in person to give you an explanation for the injustices suffered by the Eastern Clan." Xiao Luo said seriously but he looked quite timid compared to the thunderous voice of the old man.
Seeing that Xiao Luo had admitted his mistake so openly and was willing to give an explanation, Old man Wu lowered his tone as well.
"You might as well come in then and we can have a discussion. Let me see how you are going to compensate the Eastern Clan for the lives of our disciples."
Although the old man was being very overbearing, Xiao Luo had to endure because it was his Purple sect that had been at fault.
There had been some rumors about the Purple sect disciples killing off the Eastern Clan disciples which had made the Eastern Clan Leader Wu Wei so furious that he had declared that the Eastern Clan would go to war with Purple Sect if Xiao Luo didn't personally come to give an explanation for this offense.
Owing to this pretext, Xiao Luo had to meekly follow Wu Wei inside his residence.
