Everyone's a Liar

-Draco's POV-

The water brushed against the windows sluggishly. All he could hear were the sounds of the slow waves, everything was dark.

Draco had sneaked into the common room when he presumed everyone else to be asleep. He was sitting on one of the sofas, the glass disc on his lap.

He hadn't given it to Y/N yet for two reasons.

Once he did, he'd have to explain where he got it from which meant admitting that he stole the Eye of Time without telling her.

He was curious if this thing actually worked and wanted to try it out himself.

And it did work.

Draco couldn't tell how long he'd been sitting but his legs had fallen asleep. He was staring into the glass and with that into his mother's face.

At first he was surprised when he saw her. He hadn't expected to really see anyone. But she was there, smiling at him.

He hoped that nobody would walk in on him. He'd embarrass himself.

As Draco watched her, he felt a growing urge to say something but didn't know what exactly.

"Mom," he started.

"Yes?"

He bit his lip as he thought.

"Things are changing. I think…I'm changing too. In a sense."

Her smile was warm. "Sometimes change is good, Draco," she said softly.

A shiver ran down his spine. "I don't know if you would approve of it."

She stayed quiet for a while.

"Go to bed, you need sleep."

"What if I mess up?"

"You won't. Go to sleep."

Her face slowly disappeared until the glass was clear again. Draco stared at the sphere in his hands.

Did he really just talk to himself?

*****

The weekend came around and Draco felt slightly on edge for numerous reasons.

It was only a matter of time before Flitwick would notice that the pocket watch was missing and once he did it wouldn't be hard to figure out who took it. Flitwick also probably was the one who ripped the page out of the book, already suspecting that his students would snoop around. He probably knew what the artifacts did and lied to Y/N to protect her.

Speaking of Y/N, Draco knew that the longer he kept his secrets from her, the angrier she would be once she did find out. After all, he was the one who kept emphasizing trust.

They also decided to take turns working on the potion.

And if that wasn't enough, both his Quidditch team and his friend group tried to get his full attention. Pansy kept stressing that they needed to make a plan regarding Umbridge and Montague threatened that if they lost against Gryffindor, he'd replace the entire team. Of course he wouldn't actually pull through with that but it made the training even more stressful.

On top of that came the reason he went to Hogwarts to begin with: his education.

Draco spent his Saturday doing all of the above. First he studied, then he was ordered to a spontaneous training session. After that, he met with his friends to discuss further steps, he studied some more, and some more again. He went to bed early and got up around midnight to take care of the potion.

None of that was fun and once Sunday bgan, he really didn't want to get out of bed. The tea had befuddled his mind and Draco stayed under his cover until lunch time. That's when he got hungry.

The Slytherin decided to not talk to anyone today, he just wanted to be alone and have some time to breathe. After he ate, he went for a walk along the lake.

Soft rain was falling from the sky and he pulled the hood over his head. He walked for a while as he tried to figure out where to place his priorities. It seemed to him like Y/N took up too much space. Her presence alone was distracting but he also liked having her around.

She had a certain influence on him - one he couldn't pin point. Even if he was to commit to her, would his parents approve?

She did say she was pure-blood which is a big plus but there are so many other things that play a role. Her mindset, her beliefs, her family...only to name a few.

Draco groaned when he realized that he was spending all his time thinking about her again. Why couldn't he just focus on himself for once?

Frustrated, he bent down to pick up a pebble and throw it into the lake. That's when he heard something.

Voices.

He looked around and saw three figures standing a bit away, behind trees.

He let the pebble fall down and slowly walked closer until he recognized them.

Potter and his footmen.

"...my research," Granger just said.

They mostly had their backs turned to them so he took a few more steps until he could overhear the conversation.

"I don't believe it," Weasley said. "Why would she lie to us?"

"That's what we have to find out," his mud blood girlfriend replied.

"No, you have to be wrong!"

"Ron, we don't know her that well," Potter said. "We shouldn't just trust her."

"Harry is right. Especially now that she is friends with Malfoy we can't assume that she is on our side."

When he heard his own name, the Slytherin's eyes narrowed.

"But...why would she...? You must be wrong!"

Granger shook her head.

"I'm positive. No witch with the name of Y/N ever went to Ilvermorny."

Shocked, Draco stumbled back. As he did, a branch broke beneath his foot.

The three turned around and stared right into his face.

'Shit!'

"Wait," Potter yelled but Draco started running, into the forest.

He heard how they were following him, shouting his name but he was faster.

After a while, they had lost them and Draco slowed down.

He fell down on a rock.

The fact he was inside the forbidden forest didn't matter - Y/N had lied to him. She never went to Ilvermorny. What else did he not know?

And this was the girl he got in trouble for?

He felt anger growing inside of him, his hands turned into fists. Why did he trust her? Why did he trust anyone?
