Chapter 12

The next morning, Kade drove onto the highway, Paul's fingers drummed on armrest. The effects of the gas had worn off and he was discharged. He wanted to drive his bike, but the shop hadn't finished the repairs yet. Many here drove scooters, what would they think of his Honda Blackbird? What would Crystal think?

He was sick of being chauffeured around so offered to drive when Paul picked him up from the hospital.

"Ruby was hiding something. When I bent to kiss her, I smelled blood."

"Her time of the month?" Kade offered as he swerved around an eighteen-wheeler on the freeway.

"No, that was two weeks ago - wasn't it?"

"Look man, she's your fiancée. If something seemed off... or are you sure it's not that she's sick like she said?"

"Damn. I should have stayed until she felt better. Maybe she was mad at me for lying about Clive's?" His knee bobbed up and down as they drove.

What would it be like to worry about someone like that?
