BEAST

Crystal ran upstairs to her sister's room. "You ok? Got enough water?" Kade had sent her a message from Paul's phone about meeting him at the hockey game tonight. Excitement bubbled through her. She forced her face neutral. And the uncles had phoned her an hour ago about the Maxmoore job this weekend.  


"Yes." Her sister cocked her head. "But Dad's in the guest room if I need anything and he promised to help me fix the dinner for the retirement party. Where are you going?"  


"To get the next layout for the Maxmoore's house."  


"That doesn't explain the grin you're forcing away."  


"Oh." She ran a hand through her blonde hair trying to appear casual. "Well, I sorta have a date."  


She focused on a snag on the flowered bedspread rather than her sister.  


"Kade? The guy who shot me?" Ruby's voice echoed in the room.  


"Hush, I don't want Dad to know." Crystal glanced over her shoulder.  


She shrugged. "Come on, it's only a hockey game."
