"Keep still or it'll hurt worse." Crystal tugged at the gauze bandage on her sister's shoulder.

"Are you trying to rip my stitches out?"

"You're such a cry-baby." She cut away more of the fabric. "Your wound is better. And it'll stay that way, if we can change your bandages."

With the bandage off, she tossed the wad into the trashcan.

She applied the iodine, then perched on the edge of the bed while she waited for the medicine to dry.

As much as Ruby was in pain, Crystal felt better that Kade hadn't talked to her since their date. She didn't count the interrogation as talking. The less time around him the better. How well could she guard the guilt gnawing on her heart every time she was around him now?

"Let's check if your medicine is dry enough yet."

As she tore open a fresh bandage, the doorbell rang.

Crystal frowned. Who would be coming by this late in the evening? Her dad answered the door as she glanced out the window.
