Chapter 38

That night, Crystal wrestled with pillows, covers, and sleep. She tried to reach Kade and tell him she forgot to grab her bag out of the car.

Even several calls to Paul were no use. He hadn't seen Kade and didn't know where he was. She should have told her uncles, but she couldn't. Not yet. Kade would be here in the morning with breakfast. Everything would be fine.

The next morning, Crystal woke to the garbage truck rumbling outside. She yanked the pillow over her head. One day she wouldn't have to worry about working for the people she despised and waking up before dawn to cook. She wouldn't have to moonlight as a thief either.

Sleep in on a Saturday for once and wake at noon.

There was a knock on her door.

"It's too early, go away."

"It's after eight and we're late for the uncles," Ruby answered through the door. "They are asking about the sentimental gift since you didn't have time to crack the safe. Got it on you? I could run it over to them?"
