After over thirty-years of searching, Ravuth at last feels hopeful. 
Recalling the last time he saw his parents and mischievous younger brother at his village, when the Khmer Rouge herded them off like animals, along with the rest of the villagers, he can only imagine what they have been through. 

This thrilling, unpredictable, yet sometimes hilarious quest, takes you from the fashionable London restaurant scene to the wild, untamed jungles of the Cardamom Mountains, where an English baker helps a Cambodian refugee searching for his missing family and an elusive plant, the source of an exquisite spice.

The Spice

The rest of Cake’s remarkable holiday went smoothly. Deciding to stay in Cambodia, Ravuth spent most of his time with his family in the village in Kampong Speu province. After calling Colin in the UK, who, although disappointed, felt happy for him. 


 Ravuth began construction on a house after Oun gave him a plot of land near his house. With the cost of living in Cambodia cheap, he knew he had enough money to last him until he found work and that an English speaking Cambodian chef with experience in European baking and Thai food would be an asset to any restaurant in Phnom Penh. He and Cake, knowing there were more poppies, although disappointed, decided that the spice business would be far too dangerous. 


“We need to protect our old village, the poppy, and that grouchy old tiger. We need to make sure the poppy’s never found by drug cartels or anyone else,” said Ravuth
