Chapter 34

Ben parked in the City Hall parking lot and shot a glance around, looking for Cori's vehicle. It was only a couple of minutes after one o'clock, and there was no sign of it. He pulled his phone from the console. No missed calls or texts from her. Clearly, she was avoiding him. Did she know he'd been called in by Investigator Pearson and purposely made haste to leave City Hall before he got there?

His chest tightened as he stared at the building through the windshield of his truck. God, he didn't want to go in there. He looked guilty as sin - he knew the victims, not personally, but he knew of their indiscretions and had been dumb enough to tell the guys at the lunch table. Now, they knew he knew the ladies, and word to the outside was doubtlessly spreading like wildfire since none of those gossipers could keep their mouths shut to save their lives. Including him. But, things were different now in light of this mess. No more gossiping. His lips were zipped.
