Chapter 40

"Maybe his phone is dead," The teenager said with hope.

Ben and Eli slid out of the truck and walked up to the Pierces' front door. He knocked. A light flicked on inside, then the outside light illuminated, and the front door swung open.

"Ben. Eli?" Martin Pierce questioned. Annoyance laced his tone.

Of course, it would. They'd just woke him up.

"Is my brother here?" Eli asked.

Martin's brows pulled together. "No. Didn't you pick him up a while ago?"

The young man shook his head.

Martin stepped back from the doorway. "Kyle! Come here!"

Ben heard the shuffling of feet, then Kyle appeared alongside his dad. The kid rubbed his eyes.

"Do you know where Holden is?" Mr. Pierce asked his son.

The sleepy-eyed kid shrugged. "Home."

"When did he leave?" Pierce questioned.

Kyle pointed at Eli. "It was a little after ten when Holden said he'd wait for his brother out front."

"You just let him go outside and wait?" Martin asked.
