Chapter 42

Ben studied the young man in the passenger seat of his truck. He looked drained.

His heart sank. Poor Cori. One of her sons was in the hospital, physically beat up, and the other was emotionally shattered, stuck between a rock and a hard place.

"It'll be fine. She'll come around. We'll talk to her when she gets home."

Eli sighed.

Ben knew she'd come around to the point the teenager could talk to her again, but she was going to flip-out when she heard what her son had to say. Unfortunately, things were going to get worse before they got better, and he wasn't sure either of them was up for that.

Ben parked on the street in front of his home and slid out of the truck as Eli did. The young man took a few steps toward his house, stopped, and turned around to face him. Pain, guilt, and fear emitted from the lad's gaze. His eyes filled with tears. A sob escaped his throat, and he fell to his knees. Ben's heart lodged in his throat as he rushed toward the poor boy. Yes, boy.
