Eli closed his eyes and drew in a long breath. A few seconds ticked by before he opened them again and cleared his throat. "Away from people who knew our dad and peg us as just like him - worthless."
He felt this kid's pain. He knew that story. He lived that story in his own way. Then, his heart grew to twice the size as he recalled all Eli's words. He'd done it for Holden and knew and appreciated how hard his mother worked. He'd never expected to hear those words come out of the kid's mouth. All these months he'd thought this kid was just a selfish teenager, he couldn't have been more wrong.
Pearson arched a brow. "You're telling me you deal drugs to save for your brother's college tuition?"
"I knew you wouldn't believe me," the teenager replied with a bit of snap in his tone.
Ben wished she didn't look so skeptical. How could Eli think that was a stupid reason for wanting to make money? The method he'd chosen was unwise, but the reason was commendable.
