Chapter 44

"Are you hungry? Do you want a late breakfast, early lunch?" Ben asked Eli as they walked out of the police station. The kid looked completely drained, but if there was one thing he recalled from raising his son was that a teenaged kid could eat twenty-four hours a day, no matter the state of mind.

Eli shrugged.

The poor kid probably didn't know what to do other than stay away from his mother for the time being.

Ben was relieved when Cori texted to let him know Holden had woken up, but he was a bit dismayed to know the lad didn't recall anything. He'd offered to go sit with them, but she'd told him it wasn't necessary. They were waiting for the doctor and thought maybe Holden would be released soon. Still, he felt a bit irresponsible not being with her, but he'd decided Eli needed him more right now.
