"Ben took me to the police station this morning."


Her heart leaped into her throat as adrenaline shot through her veins. Her entire body perspired. Her son had been to the police station without her knowledge? And Ben knew of this, was with him, and didn't think to call her?


Her gaze flew to him. "You didn't think to let me know this? Who gave you permission?"


"It's not his fault," Eli interrupted, drawing her attention back to him. "Mom, it's all on me. Nobody else. He just did what I asked him. After last night, I knew I had to..." 


Her son paused and stared at the tabletop. His shoulders slumped. 


This was serious and difficult for him, and as angry as she was at him, she knew she needed to pull it together for him. She inhaled and blew out a long, cleansing breath then peeked at Ben again and stole some strength from his gaze before turning back to her son. "Eli, honey, tell me what happened."
