Chapter 52

When he stepped into the shop, every solemn gaze landed on him, then drifted down to his feet.

Boots.

He looked at the old boots he wore. Had Stacy remembered more to tell Pearson when she went up to the hospital?

Ben swung his gaze around the room. All public works employees stood bootless.

He lifted his gaze to meet Investigator Pearson's. "You want these, too?"

She nodded.

He knew the drill. He'd been through it once already. He bent over to unlace them. Not a word from anyone as he did so. The silence was eerie.

Ben pulled the boots from his feet and then stood so quickly he got a head-rush. He closed his eyes to alleviate the spinning as he reached over to the mechanic's workbench to steady himself. Visions of Stacy Kennedy's beaten body lying on the road in front of his sweeper passed through his mind. He shivered.
