Chapter 19

I stared at the empty vending machine that afternoon, stomach rumbling and my heart heavy. I was going to starve to death.

A throat cleared behind me, and I turned to find Chance towering over me. I froze.

His hand stretched out, and I looked down to see a candy bar.

I looked back up and met his gaze with a frown. Why was he showing me that? Was he rubbing it in?

"Take it," he said, his voice a deep rumble.

I kept frowning and didn't make a move. What was his game? I didn't understand what he would gain from giving me food. Why was he being nice to me all of a sudden? I hadn't been nice to him, but I'd been provoked every time, so that wasn't my fault. Still, he'd admitted we hated each other, so I didn't understand what he was doing.

"It's for you," he said, never taking his eyes from mine.
