Sitting around the library the next evening, the five of us were each doing our own thing. Ava and Paulo were playing chess, Chance was drawing on the couch beside me, and Dan was on a recliner playing on his phone. I was studying again. No surprise there.
"I'm sorry, sir, I can't help you. The kitchens are closed," a voice said from the hall. Terrance.
"I am a paying guest, and I'm hungry," someone snapped.
I started to stand, ready to help Terrance. But before I could, Chance pushed up to his feet and stepped out into the hall.
"Can you please keep it down?" he said in that deep rumble that did something funny to my stomach.
"Why don't you mind your own business," the person said.
"And why don't you get ahold of yourself and stop bothering the staff with nonsense."
There was a long moment of silence before Terrance spoke. "Thank you, Mr. Belgarde."
Chance said nothing and returned to the room, taking his seat on the other end of the couch.
