Breakfast was a scarce affair, and my soul died a little as I finished my tray.
They assigned Chance and me to inventory batteries during the work party and hand out refills to those who needed them. We were set up in a hall closet with a table set in front of the doorway. The space was tighter than I'd typically find comfortable, but I didn't mind one bit with Chance there.
A few people came by, and we took their old batteries before giving them new ones.
It was going well until a portly man came up to our table. "I need four D batteries."
"You have to hand in the dead ones before we can give you any," I replied, giving him my best customer service smile.
"That's bullshit. I didn't bring them."
I shrugged, my smile falling a little. "I'll wait for you to get them. I'm not in a hurry."
"Oh, aren't you Mother Teresa?" The man sneered. "How about you just give me the damn batteries, and we both go on our merry way?"
Now I was frowning. "I'm not allowed, sir."
