CHAPTER 40

Lying on the floor, Edmund raised his head and saw her. He wanted to believe that the only reason his heart beat so loudly inside his chest was because of the stress of climbing the window in his drunken state and not because of how beautiful the lady glaring down at him looked. The giddiness and tingles he felt were because of how cold the floor was.

Life was so unfair. How could it be that when she thought that when she had finally gotten a good grip on her life and sent it in the right direction, the man came crashing into her life like that?

He smiled. She looked even more beautiful in his upside-down view. Noticing that they hadn't done anything but stare at each other as if waiting for the other to say something first. He sat up on the floor. "Hey, sweetheart,"

"Duke Edmund, why—"

"Edmund," He corrected, "I don't feel like a duke right now."

"Why are you on the floor?"

"Because my feet won't cooperate with me." He shook his head.
