Chapter 8: A Close Encounter

A few nights later, Lily stayed late at the office to catch up on some work. Since the elevator incident, Barbara had been cool to her, and Lily was eager to get back into her good graces. She tried not to take Barbara's tirade personally. It wasn't the first time one of her employees had been on the barbed end of their boss's tongue, and she doubted it would be the last.

Barbara had a reputation for being a strict, no-nonsense leader. Demanding and focused, with no personal life of her own, she expected one hundred percent from her employees. But, in return, her associates were given opportunities that most firms denied young lawyers for years.

The firm had a reputation for winning large settlements for its clients against multi-national corporations. It was often grueling work, but full of reward. Despite Barbara's challenging leadership style, Lily loved her job at the Flannery Law and was proud to be a member of the team.
