By the time Lily realized she'd forgotten her purse in the office, she was already halfway outside the building. "Darn," she cried. "I have to go back upstairs. I forgot something. I don't know what's wrong with me. I'm usually not forgetful."
Who was she kidding, she thought. The problem was obvious. Standing so close to these two mysterious men was both thrilling and distracting.
"I'd be happy to escort you back upstairs," Greer offered.
Somewhere in the distance, a coyote howled. Gavin tensed, scanning the horizon. "Then perhaps I'll leave you in the capable hands of my uncle," he said to Lily, suddenly appearing eager to leave. Lily barely turned around before he was gone.
"It isn't necessary to babysit me," Lily said with a laugh. "I often work alone here at night. I can take care of myself."
"I don't doubt that," Greer said. He also seemed suddenly distracted, searching the street as if looking for Gavin.
