Chapter 39: A Desperate Denial

"Lily, please, be reasonable," Greer called after her as she stepped outside the building. Seeing her, the driver leaped out of the front seat. Then, circling the car, he held the door open for her. Lily slid in, squeezing up against the window, while Penelope silently climbed into the seat behind her.

"I know you're upset, but we need to stick together," Greer said as he climbed in beside Lily. "As much as I know you'd like to, you can't just wish this away. You're being childish."

"Maybe that's because my childhood was stolen from me," Lily said, refusing to look at him. Instead, she trained her eyes on the passing trees and kept them there. "Besides, who says you're right? You admitted to me that you don't know anything about VampirX. You have no idea what it is or how it works. So, how can you tell for certain that I will turn into a vampire?"
