Chapter 40: A Desperate Confession

When Lily woke up, she found herself stretched out on the couch, Jeff hovering over her with a worried look on his face. "Thank god, you're awake," he said, placing a cold cloth on her forehead. "I was about to call an ambulance."

"No!" Lily cried, sitting upright so fast that the cloth flew off her head. "No ambulance." She looked up at Jeff and, relieved to be around mortals again, burst into tears.

"Tell me what happened," Jeff coaxed, crouching down beside her so he could look her in the eyes. He gave her one of his iconic boyish grins. "Believe it or not, I thought you said 'vampires' were after you."

Lily tensed, torn between sounding crazy and telling the truth. But Jeff was a police officer, she reasoned. He heard strange stories all the time. He knew about the attacks in the park, probably even some gory details that he hadn't shared. So would he be shocked to learn that vampires existed?
