Chapter 14: Mountain View Ranch

Nico could barely form words in his amazement. “How did you... how did you *know*?”

Rebecca looked up from her phone. Her expectant smile faded slightly. “You’ve been here before?”

“A *long* time ago.” His brow furrowed as he thought. “My mother used to bring me here. I was... six? Seven?”

Her disappointment was palpable. “So you already know how to ride?”

“Ride?” He turned to her, delight dawning on his face. “Is that why we’re here?”

She nodded. “Horseback riding. I thought...”

“I’ve never been horseback riding,” he said, enthused with the idea. “My mother used to bring me here to see the horses, but we never did any riding. I wanted to, but she thought I was too young. I think she planned on signing me up for lessons, eventually, but...” His smile faded. “Well, it didn’t happen.”

“Would you prefer we do something else?” Rebecca asked tentatively.

“No, this is fine. This is great!” His smile returned as he beamed at her. “Now I know why you wanted to change clothes.”
