Chapter 16: The Solution

The news hit her like a fist to the gut. She’d known Gloria would be out for several months, but she’d counted on a few weeks of warning before her return.

“So soon,” she said, unable to hide the disappointment in her voice.

Nico sighed. “Originally she was going to wait another two weeks, but she says she’s climbing the walls at her apartment, and her doctor—rather unexpectedly, from what I understand—signed a note this morning authorizing her return to work. She’s already sent it over to HR, and they’ve signed off on her coming back.”

Gloria sounded like she was much as a workaholic as Nico was—or had been.

“Oh, well,” Rebecca said, striving to make her tone cheerful, “it’s good that she’s recovered from her accident so quickly.”

“It is,” Nico said, but his expression remained gloomy. “However, I realize that her return puts you in a... difficult situation.”
