Chapter 17: The Proposal

Rebecca walked quickly down the sidewalk, doing her best to keep tears from falling.

Nico hadn’t made it back to the office before she’d needed to leave. She always had to clock out at the dot of five on Fridays so she could quickly change her clothes and shoes and get to The Whiskey Kitchen in time for her shift. There wasn’t a convenient bus route so she was forced to walk, and it usually took her forty-five minutes.

She hadn’t been able to say goodbye, but maybe it was for the best. Then again, he might drop by the restaurant tonight. She was hoping he would... and she was hoping he wouldn’t.

It’d be nice to be able to thank him for everything he’d done for her, but at the same time, seeing him would be a painful reminder that her job... their time together... was over. She wouldn’t be able to see him every day, hear his voice, laugh at his jokes.

Her musings were interrupted by the ringing of her cell phone. She checked the display and saw that her mother was calling.
