Chapter 20: Unusual Circumstances

Nico insisted on calling a cab to take her home, just as he had done on her first day of work. There was an odd symmetry to that, she reflected on the drive back to Mrs. Tiedeman’s house.

He’d also pressed a wad of cash in her hand, more than enough to cover both cab fare and what she would have made in tips at the restaurant that evening.

Dazedly, she paid the cab fare and let herself into the house.

“Hello?” came her landlady’s voice from the kitchen.

“It’s me, Mrs. T,” Rebecca called as she re-locked the door.

“Rebecca?” Mrs. Tiedeman appeared in the doorway between the foyer and kitchen. “Goodness, I wasn’t expecting you tonight. Is everything all right?”

“I—” Rebecca wasn’t sure how to answer. “To be honest, I don’t know,” she finally said.

Mrs. Tiedeman’s eyebrows rose. “My, it sounds like you have had an interesting day.” She gestured toward the dining room. “Come have some supper and you can give me all the details later.”
