Chapter 27: Breaking the News

“Whew,” Nico said as soon as they were safely back in his office. “I hadn’t expected an interrogation.” He flopped down on his office couch with a sigh.

“He was just looking out for your best interests,” Rebecca said, more bothered than she wanted to let on, dropping into the scoop chair across from him. “It’s clear he was worried I was a gold digger. When you think about it, that’s what I am.”

“You are *not* a gold digger,” Nico exclaimed, sitting up indignantly. “For one thing, this whole marriage was my idea, not yours. For another, you thought the settlement amount listed in the prenup was too much. That’s hardly the behavior of someone who’s marrying me for my money.”

“Except that I *am* marrying you for your money,” Rebecca said, her eyes troubled.
