Chapter 34: One Month Later

One month later, Rebecca sat on the toilet in the master bath in the condo, staring down in disbelief at the white stick in her hand.

It was a pregnancy test.

A positive pregnancy test.

It was the fourth one she’d taken. After the first one had turned positive, she’d been sure it must be a fluke. A mistake. So she’d gone to a 24-hour pharmacy and bought three more tests, each one a different brand than the first one. And every single one had come up positive.

How had this happened?

Well, she knew how it had happened given that they’d had sex every day—sometimes twice a day—for the last month. That wasn’t altogether unusual for a newly married couple, granted, but theirs was supposed to be a pretend marriage. It had morphed, by tacit and mutual consent, into a pretend marriage with benefits.

She and Nico hadn’t spent a night in separate beds since their wedding night—the one night they hadn’t used protection.

This was going to change everything.

Everything.
