Chapter 48: Comfort

It had been a long, exhausting, emotionally fraught day. Between the rush to pack, the flight, and the long hours of waiting at the hospital, Rebecca was nearly asleep on her feet by the time she and Nico arrived at the condo.

It hadn’t changed, she noted groggily as she stumbled toward the master bedroom. Her feet remembered the way, thankfully, as she was mostly on autopilot.

“Are you hungry?” Nico asked. He looked almost as exhausted as she did. “I’ve got sandwich fixings. I could make you some pasta, or scrambled eggs.”

“Thanks, but I’m too tired to eat,” Rebecca said with a weary smile. “I’d rather just go straight to bed.”

“Okay, sure.” But Nico hesitated at the door of his—their—bedroom. “Just so you know, I’m more than willing to sleep elsewhere, if you’d prefer not to share the bed.”

“Do *you* want to sleep alone?” Rebecca asked curiously. They’d only shared a bed for a month, after all—maybe he’d decided he preferred nighttime solitude.
