Chapter 11

After breakfast, Verna and Aunt Flory colored their hair. While they waited for their roots to lighten, Aunt Flory helped Celeste with one of her lessons for practicing different facial expressions.

"What do we do if we meet someone on the street and they say hello?" Aunt Flory asked, smiling brightly.

"Smile and say hello back," Celeste said, giving one of her practiced smiles. "And if they laugh, laugh with them." She giggled awkwardly. 'It sounded like someone was strangling her.' "And never interrupt," she added. "That's always rude."

Zoey watched the dark shadow that had eclipsed Aunt Flory's roots slowly vanish as the dye took hold.

"What else?" Aunt Flory said encouragingly.

"When someone addresses you, look into their eyes," Celeste continued, forcing her eyes upward to meet Aunt Flory's gaze. "Also, always allow for personal space by standing at least an arm's length away." She nodded her head agreeably. "I like that one."
