"Anything is possible," Aunt Flory said, checking Verna's roots. "Looks good," she announced, guiding her toward the sink. "I still shudder when I think of how that man might have ruined Celeste's life if I'd listened to him. He insisted she would eventually withdraw from the outside world."

"And that she would never be able to care for herself," Ruby added. Though they'd all heard variations of the story many times, they never tired of it. It reminded them that they were living with a miracle.

"I wonder what made him so sure of himself?" Zoey asked. "Even after all this time, I'm never one hundred percent sure how she'll react to anything."

"That's what I told him. It's was just a matter of trial and error with her, but he insisted our hard work wouldn't be enough."

"Then he didn't know much about you," Verna said, sitting back in a chair for Flory to rinse her hair, her cigarette still clamped between her fingers.
