Chapter 31

"But we've seen that book a hundred times. There's nothing in it except a few pictures."

"Right. But there's one I need to look at again." Zoey opened the trap door and fumbled around the floor for the yearbook. It was right where she'd left it.

"Is the ladder steady enough, Zoey?" Celeste asked, her face squeezed with concern.

Zoey smiled down over her. "Like a rock. I'll be right down."

"I hope there aren't spiders up there," Ruby said, smirking.

Zoey considered tossing a pretend spider down on Ruby but decided against it. She didn't want to scare Celeste. She grabbed the book and passed it down to Ruby, who blew a layer of dust off it.

"I need to wash my hands," Celeste said, watching Zoey climb down the ladder. She headed for the washroom while Zoey and Ruby flipped through the pages of the yearbook. They paused at their mother's graduation photo. It was the same one Aunt Flory kept on the living room mantel.

Ruby shrugged. "Is this what you wanted?"
