He looked shocked for a second and closed the drawer. His expression softened. "Well, I'm not sure how you think I can help you there," he said.

"I know you were her friend," she said, thrusting the yearbook photo at him. Defying Aunt Flory, she'd climbed the ladder to the attic and retrieved the book while Aunt Flory was out. Ruby had helped her after she threatened to tell Aunt Flory she wore makeup outside the house.

"I wondered how long it would take you to get to me," he said. "I heard you've been asking around."

"Since you were her friend, you must know something," she said. "I need to find my father."

Chewing on the inside of his cheek, he got up to shut his office door.

"Please?" Zoey said.
