Chapter 35

Run!" Zoey called, racing toward the Turnbull house as Evelyn's cries grew louder.

"Maybe we should get Aunt Flory first," Ruby said, struggling to keep up. "It doesn't sound good."

"No time," Zoey whispered. "We have to make sure he's not killing her first. Then we'll get help."

The girls dipped under the kitchen window to listen inside. Her back flattened against the house, Zoey craned her neck to see through the glass.

Ruby yanked her down by the shirt. "Don't let him see you," she hissed. She spun on her heels. "I'm going to get Aunt Flory."

"Wait," Zoey said, peeking in the window again. Inside, she saw Evelyn bent over a mop, the floor covered in glass and blood. She spoke softly, her words muffled. For a moment, Zoey thought she was alone. Then she spotted Virgil Turnbull standing at the sink with the water running. "I see both of them," she whispered to Ruby.

"Is Evelyn hurt?" Ruby asked.

"I can't tell, but there's blood on the floor," Zoey whispered.
