Chapter 38

Zoey dropped her stick. "Stop crying," she said, trying to sound stern. Evelyn kept her head down, hiding her face.

Zoey softened her voice a little bit. "I won't tell," she said. "If you tell me why you did it."

Evelyn looked up and wiped her eyes with the back of her hand. "You know very well why," she said. "Don't pretend you haven't thought about it."

"About what?" Zoey asked. "What are you talking about?"

"My father. I figure it's only a matter of time before you start accusing him of being your father. Well, you can't have him. He's all I have."

Zoey looked at her in astonishment. "You thought I wanted to steal your father?"

Evelyn wiped a hand across her nose and looked at her feet. "I wouldn't put it past you."

"So you'd rather let people think he was hurting you?"
