Chapter 43

A nurse in a crisp uniform at the front desk intercepted Zoey, Ruby, and Mr. Nelson as they entered the hospital. She appeared to be waiting for them. "Starling?" she barked, handing Mr. Nelson a clipboard with a medical history form. He politely declined. "Is there a problem?" she asked curtly. "We'll need the information to treat her."

"Dr. Tanner is her doctor," Mr. Nelson offered. "I'm just her neighbor. I'm sorry, but I can't offer any useful information regarding her health."

"What about the girls?" she asked, her lips pursed, head nodding in their direction. "Are they immediate family?"

1. "I think she has a bad heart," Zoey said, "but I don't know much more than that." The nurse slapped the clipboard on the counter, turned on her heel, and disappeared behind a set of swinging doors. When Dr. Tanner appeared, Mr. Nelson looked relieved to see him.

"They want information on Flory, "Mr. Nelson said. "I'm afraid I didn't have much to offer."
