"How long have you been standing there?" Aunt Flory asked nervously.
"We'll get to all that," Verna said. "But right now, there's something else I've wanted to tell you for a long time. Ever since my sister died." She choked for a moment on her words. "You three always feel so sorry for me around Harold. Do you want to know the real reason I can't spend time with him? Why I avoid being in the same room with him? It's because I can't face how cruelly I treated him."
"I don't understand," Aunt Flory said. "He was the one who hurt you."
"Harold didn't run off with Alice because he loved her," Verna said. "If I hadn't been so full of anger and pride, I would have seen that. Harold never did a single thing to hurt me in all the years we knew each other. So, why was I so quick to assume the worst?"
Aunt Flory looked confused.
