Chapter 61

The weather was perfect for a walk in the park. Mrs. Nelson hummed happily to herself as she maneuvered her new wheelchair along the street. Ruby, Zoey, and Celeste quickened their pace to keep up with her.

"Wow, you sure can move in that thing," Ruby puffed. "You could outrun all of us."

Looking pleased, Mrs. Nelson sped up a little more.

"Someone's in a hurry," Ruby whispered to Zoey.

"It's nice to see, isn't it?" Zoey replied. "It's better than her staying in bed all day."

Aunt Flory had prepared a thermos of ice tea for them. Mrs. Nelson balanced it across her lap along with a burlap bag of items she had instructed Celeste to collect from the house. As Mrs. Nelson maneuvered around the bumps in the road to avoid jostling them, her cotton floral skirt billowed around her ankles like a parachute.

"I can carry those if you like," Zoey offered, but she refused.
