Chapter 62

Mrs. Nelson reached for her husband's diary and flipped through it with her good hand, looking for a specific page. Ruby and Celeste patiently arranged themselves at Mrs. Nelson's feet. "Ah h-here it is," Mrs. Nelson said, at last, flattening one of the pages with her good hand. Handing Zoey the book, she asked her to read it aloud. The handwriting on the page was unfamiliar, much more child-like than Mr. Nelson's careful hand. Zoey read slowly:

"Dear Martin:

I hope you will forgive this intrusion into your private diary, but I'm desperate. You avoid me at all costs, refusing to even look at me. Why? Why won't you let Ellen and I give you this gift out of love and admiration?
