Chapter 16: Opened My Eyes

Growing up, I always thought that I would end up spending the rest of my life alone—unless I were to find a Druid companion. No friends, no lovers, not even any acquaintances. I would just know people, never interact with them. And I would’ve done it all to protect the existence of my people.

Now that I’m here, among my own kind, my own people, who recognize and understand me, I can’t imagine what that life would look like, feel like, and I don’t think I want to. I’ve lived my life alone for too long, and I’m glad to have that chance to leave it behind for something better.

My eyes move between Iris, Riley, and Lucian as they speak, making plans, or trying to come up with some. In the midst of it all, Riley strips all the seriousness away to crack a joke, and we break out into laughter. Despite there being so much going on in her head, she still allows room for herself.
