Chapter 11: Jambalaya

Luke didn't pause for too ostentatiously long; he stopped himself from fidgeting and walked behind the bar.

Abel spotted Luke and his neutral expression brightened into a smile.

"I thought today was your day off, isn't it?"

The nervous twittering in his gut paused and Luke turned in the direction of Miss R's voice.

She stood in the doorway of the restrooms with a confused look on her face.

He met her eye for one second and the day of the week dawned on him. He deflated, covering his eyes with his hand. "Yeah, you're right."

"Do you need to order something, darlin'?" Miss R teased him, though Luke thought he saw a note of sympathy on her face.

"No, I'm fine," Luke murmured, shaking his head. He stood in limbo for a second, trying to decide whether or not he should just leave.

"Are you hungry?" Abel chimed in.

His words sunk in a beat late to Luke, and he blinked at him.

Abel waited expectantly, an amused smile pulling across his face.
