Chapter 27: Knock

It occurred to Luke as he walked to Eventide that he could text Abel and ask if he was coming into the bar that night—but in no world did he have the confidence to do that.

Instead, he opened Abel's phone contact, and, just in case, deleted his information. He kept the text conversation—he re-read Abel's message a few times, ignoring the heat in his cheeks and stifling a smile from his lips—, but felt a little better seeing "Unknown" at the top of his screen instead of Abel's name.

It felt like it'd been so long since he'd been to work, but in reality, it'd been less than a week. He walked into the bar and smiled tentatively to Miss R, who looked surprised to see him.

"I thought you'd never show up again," Miss R said, a wry smile on her face.

"No, I'm here," Luke said, taking his place behind the bar and hoping that, even after his short break, he still remembered how to make drinks.

"What's with the turtleneck? Got bit by a vampire?" she teased.
