“I’m alright.” I swallowed the bile in my throat. “How are you, though?”
We sat as Mariella explained the events that took place while I was gone. Well, most of it, as I suspected from the lightly flushed cheeks and lessening eye contact. My head tilted at the mention of the gear Professor Hale had shown them, but I put it aside.
I spent most of my afternoon locked up in the suite, skin rough with goosebumps whenever my thoughts would drift to the scene at the library. I decided to let the cool water of a shower keep me awake, and keep me away from the nightmares that would surely ensue.
Mariella seemed tense as she finished, her hands curled into tight fists, and thumbs brushing over each other. “This can’t be happening. What is happening to us?”
Right then, I wished I could tell her.
“We’re gonna be fine. Just—” I paused, thinking of some way to lay it down easier on her. “Let me know if you accept or not. We have this week’s end to decide.”
