SERINE'S POV
Serine paused just a block away from the bookshop's back entrance and glanced behind herself. Seeing no sign of pursuit, she crouched down and took a deep breath. She closed her eyes and reached her mind out to those nearby. The night had gotten so late it was nearly early and the streets were fairly empty of traffic in the area. Serine searched for a moment, looking for the disciplined mind of a Hunter in the vicinity.
Finally finding a pair, Serine hesitated. Remembering the way she'd nearly killed several of their brethren just the night before, she pulled back from their minds, afraid.
"Do it for Rem and Jonathan," she whispered to herself.
Steeling her nerves, Serine reached out again. She lightly touched the mind of one of the two Hunters and carefully scanned his surface thoughts.
