'What if I am alone in the universe? What if I was just reborn in a time far later than my last life but on the same planet? And I have evolved to feel my bloodstream. But for what purpose?'
Evolution worked not by nature simply giving everyone something but by one organism differing from everyone else by having an attribute that the majority didn't. Something that would just so happen to give them an edge in survival. This allows them to live longer lives on average and carry over their genes to the next generation easier, where their offspring might inherit such differences. And so on, until everyone had these traits because all the others who didn't died.
So if he were to be able to feel his own bloodstream or something similar, then it must carry a vital role in helping his proficiency in a subject. But the question was what subject? Humans were beyond needing such things for survival in a simple hierarchy of apex predators. At least if we where talking his previous world. Now, this was just a theory but he didn't want to rule it out quite yet.
He had officially been in this world for four months, after his birth and realization that he had died and been reborn again, he found himself unconscious.
Once he awoke, however, he found himself in something akin to an orphanage, maybe shelter would be a better word, yes. It was something similar to a hub. A foundation where people would come in and out. trading odd accessories for what he assumed was this world's currency. On top of this, it was also a home to raise the young.
'But how can we afford such a thing? If I was born in a decaying building there's no way we can be above average wealth. So how could we afford to stay here this long?'
If you were forced to give birth in such an area then he saw no reason to why you'd be able to handle such prices. Then again it could be that she just happened to be there. but why would you be in the middle of some ruins at such a close time to labor? That also didn't explain why a nurse would be present.
His curiosity about the situation was rising but he forced himself to set the thoughts aside. It wasn't relevant to his current situation. As something far more grand was currently taking place.
He had been attempting to crawl ever since he could remember. It seemed like an impossible jump he could never hope to achieve. These four months went by quickly for the most part, but whenever he attempted to crawl it felt like an eternity. Similar to that of multiple cyberpunk development cycles.
'Damnit! Almost there! So close!' he was currently inhabiting an old crib. His tiny knees barely held up as they lay on the warm bed. Shaking as if a violent earthquake were taking place. Near his upper body, he let one unstable limb clench the blankets with another holding onto the outer bars of the crib for dear life.
He had worked up to this point for the last couple of months and had failed hundreds of times trying to stably get on all fours. 'Damn muscles' It seemed no matter how ahead he was intellectually, he couldn't decide how strong his muscles were. that was an aspect of his body outside his control, at least for the time being.
Yet he was so close. So, so close. He had been at this general stage for almost a month now. And he could feel the taste of glory approaching. It was so very close. 'Three, two, one!'
As the last number came to a halt, he let his grip on the bar fall and quickly shifted the appendix to the bed's blanket gripping it with all his life as he spread his body to cover a larger field. Hoping he had finally done it. 'YES! FINAL-' and just as found himself celebrating the event...
Plop
'...Damnit!' here he was spread out on the bed, starfish pose and head sunken into the mattress... Still not crawling. He could've sworn he had it. He felt the victory on his tongue! before it was switched with failure as he fell into despair.
"Atreyu!" a soft voice sprang out, swiftly covering the room as the door peeked open. The light reaching out to burn his eyes with no hesitation. It was his mother, her pale blond hair flowing in the nonexistent wind.
Her golden pink eyes scanning the room as she quickly targeted him in his darkest moment.
"Oh, there you are!"
'Where else would I be?' Cribs were modeled similar to that of prisons for a reason.
Seeing that he had raised his head to glance at her, she gave a warm smile and subtly widened the door further. Furtherly exposing him to the horrific light in the process. And awkwardly stumbled towards him.
"Awww, Did I wake you? I'm sorry!" she spoke in an almost inaudible tone. Clear worry in her voice.
'Oooh! that's brisk!' damn light.
It has become a regular necessity for the woman to come inside and check on him. If he was awake then she'd take him to breakfast, while if asleep he'd presume she'd just leave him be.
A look of confusion crossed her face as she looked at his pose. Which quickly shifted to one of curiosity as she carefully picked him up.
"Did you sleep well?"
Something he had quickly picked up on was that under normal circumstances the population of this world needed a lot less sleep compared to that of his last.
While on his last planet you needed around eight hours of sleep per sixteen hours of consciousness to stay on a regular schedule, a ratio of a third of your time. Here it quickly differed to that of two hours representing every sixteen active hours. Or that of an eighth of your time.
But that also meant we probably needed more nutrition to survive. Which was supported by how often he had to eat while here.
He had also noticed the noticeable difference in how the days seemed naturally longer. He couldn't say for certain how much longer but it was enough for him to pick up on it next to instantaneously.
'That must mean our planets tilt axis and rotation speed isn't quite the same as earth' That would explain the longer day and night cycle. As well as how extreme the environment was. But it would also have many implications.
For example, the tilt axis of a planet determines how extreme the seasons are at any current point. Because as the planet is rotating, it's tilt determines what side is facing the sun more often. And what would be facing at a more unapproachable angle. Or otherwise known as winter and summer. If you had a ball and drew a perfect straight line separating it in half, and than tilted it at an angle. Face any part of that ball along that tilt, towards an object and the upper and lower sides will no longer be in a symmetrical size. Instead a majority of one side will be facing towards that object. Now turn that ball 180 degrees and it will be the exact opposite. That is how the tilt of a planet would affect its seasons.
The general side of the planet where light is always facing, is summer with the ladder explaining winter. And near the top of that globe there could be a spot which is always in constant daylight, and a spot near the bottom in constant moonlight. That is why seasons brutality are usually more powerful near the top or bottom of a planet.
But there was also the rotation speed of a planet. Which would determine how fast it was spinning on this axis. And also controlling the average day and night cycle. Here that speed was on the slower end while the tilt was on a higher point that of earth, not by much though.
By now his mother had carried him to the cafeteria. Letting him sit on a baby stool just next to the window, it was currently day and a pale blue, almost white sun sat barely visible.
There's two explanations that come to mind when thinking about such phenomena. 'Number one is that either I'm near the edge of the Goldilocks zone, or that the sun that this planet is orbiting is generating more heat than that of my last'
But seeing at how the sun was a pale blue, he could assume it was the ladder. Blue stars generate more heat than yellow, orange, or red stars. And looking at how it's more of a pale blue, he'd have to guess it was a type-A star.
'I believe a type-A star is a whiteish blue if I remember correctly, somewhere between 7000 Kelvin and 11000 Kelvin? Something like that...' if his hypothesis was true then to inhabit such a planet he must be residing in it's Goldilocks zone which would be noticeably further than his last planet. Thus the orbit around the star would take longer and resulting in a longer year. 'I must be at a much further AU than that of earth'
In other words, multiple years on earth would be one year here. Now, this was all just a rough estimation and his memory was quite foggy on the Astronomical Unit's measurement system but it should be close enough.
On top of all this, he couldn't help but notice that the gravity here felt stronger. Not widely so like the cycles of day and night but definitely above his past inhabitants. All this gave him a satisfying amount of information on the general scope of his planet.
'I'd estimate it's about 1.10x to 1.30x the size of the last planet, I can't say for certain though' not until he had the actual data at least.
'Damn this stuff is good! What's in it?' he was eating an oatmeal-like substance, except it was whiter and thinner.
Putting everything into perspective, a day and night cycle here seems to be about 10-earth days if you put it on an average. 5 days for night and 5 for day. He was also most likely near the equator looking at how that didn't seem to differ, At least thats from what he had noticed. The seasons are more unpredictable and harsher. Probably a tilt of around 30 degrees compared to the 23.5 of earth and this planet was noticeably bigger as well, thus higher gravity. And since less sleep was needed per 24-hours, he'd need about 10-hours of sleep representing every day or night. And A lot more nutrition, Especially vitamin D.
All in all, this world was way different from that of earth. And it still blew his mind that he had confirmed that this wasn't his same planet. 'So there really are multiple intelligent life forms out there…'
Suddenly though, interrupting his thoughts a huge bang went aloud followed by a sudden rumbling that shook the environment similar to that of an earthquake. 'What the-!' His stool suddenly went unstable as his head went crashing towards the ground.
'Not good!' A fall like that could easily endanger him in his current body, especially looking at how his head was pointed towards the ground. 'Am I going to die again?' But before he could finish the thought, an external force swiftly caught his fall, essentially saving his life in the process. He wanted to see who had saved him but to no avail. Looking around him he found nobody holding him… what?
Instead, just a few meters away a figure had his hand reached out towards him in a grabbing gesture, not only this but as they pulled there limb back towards there chest he followed, by definition he was levitating at the current moment. And it seemed to be by the control of the mysterious character.
'What the fu-'
"Oh who's a good baby! Yes you are!" As he had fallen into the persons arms, they began to coo in a light tone. But he couldn't make out the gender it belonged to. They were utterly mysterious, with a paper bag covering their head and neck, and not an inch of skin, his savior was utterly unrecognizable.
But he had other questions in his mind. One's that easily overwhelmed his curiosity on why a person would be wearing a bag over their head. 'Did I just... Float?'
