The next morning, Alex woke early to the pleasant aroma of brewing coffee. She slid out of bed, threw on her robe, and stumbled to the kitchen. Peter stood by the counter. Already dressed and ready for the day.
"You're going to work today?" she asked.
"Sort of. The doctor hasn't released me for full duty yet, but I have a couple of things I can work on in the office."
The coffee pot beeped and Peter reached over, grabbed the carafe, poured a cup, and handed it to her. When she took it from him her fingers brushed against his, sending a rush of excitement to course through her veins, nearly causing her to spill the coffee.
He quickly jerked his hand back from her as if he'd touched a hot stove. Conversely, his gaze didn't retreat. Sparks sizzled between them until he turned away to grab his travel mug off the counter.
He took a few steps toward the door, then glanced over his shoulder. "I'll see you later."
She nodded. "Bye."
