Chapter 32

A couple of hours later, Alex woke from her nap to find Peter staring at her from the chair across the room. His deep, dark brown eyes radiated concern. He rose from his seat, walked over to the bed, and knelt on the floor beside her, aligning his gaze with hers. Leaning forward, he gently pressed his lips to her forehead.

"How are you feeling?" he asked.

"I'm good. Where are Kate and Beth?"

"They left when I got home."

He ran his fingers gently across her bruised cheek. His touch felt like no more than a whisper of air, but it sent a ripple of warmth throughout her body. He rested his fingers on her cheek for a moment before he pulled them back.

Alex pushed herself up into a seated position and leaned back against the headboard.

"I understand I owe my life to you and Captain Franke," she said as she stared gratefully into Peter's eyes.
