Chapter 39: The Question of Magic III

Anders allowed Nene to pass then blocked the doorway before Amelia could exit. Looking into his face, her stomach clenched - had she misjudged Anders' willingness to take her guest with them to market today?

'Is there a problem with Nene coming with us?' she asked. 'There is plenty of room in the back.'

'She is a witch.'

'Sorry? How can you tell?' Did Anders have some magical ability himself? Did he know she could use magic? Tensing, Amelia searched his face for some clue.

'Just look at her. She dresses like one of those women who live in the Tangled Woods, and everyone knows they are all witches,' Anders whispered.

Amelia's shoulders slumped with relief. 'Tosh! She's an elderly traveller who I offered hospitality to last night, and a lift into Port Marden today.'

'I'm telling you, she's a witch.' Anders' lips curled in distaste. 'If she's caught with us then we will be tainted by association.'
