Chapter 59: Emer Answers II

The look on Seamus's face vindicated Emer's decision to eat alone that night. As soon as she mentioned she could no longer sit around and wait for destiny to find her, his features hardened to an inscrutable mask. After fifteen years together, she knew him well enough to realise he was holding his explosion inside until she finished talking.

'At the moment, I feel like I am living half a life. I'm not allowed to do my job just in case something happens to me, and at home, I always wonder if this is the last time I will read with my children or eat a meal with all of you.'

She sat back in her seat and watched as his expression change from confused, to worried, to downright scared. Finally, it settled on concerned, and the only sign of his internal stress was the white of his knuckles as he placed his clasped hands on the kitchen table.

'I'm sure, once Amelia's named the new Great Seer, she will lift the ban on your guard activities if you ask her.'
