“Pheuan,” he spun me towards me, my gaze caught by his striking purple irises.

“I’ll never let you walk through life alone,” he assured me.

“Pheuan,” I paused, my words almost caught in my throat. Under normal circumstances that would have been the most romantic thing I’d ever heard in my life, but now, I could hardly be appreciative when my husband was still alive and only a short distance away. “I need to do this alone,” I insisted.

Anurak clung to my arm. “Not this time,” he assured me. “I can’t live with you getting hurt.”

“I can defend myself, pheuan. You saw me back there!” I tried to reason with him, but he wouldn’t let go of me. We were tethered, his fingers clamped tightly around my wrist.

“A lovers quarrel?” I heard my husband’s voice echoing through the fog. All I could see were his emerald eyes piercing directly at me.

“Be prepared, pheuan,” Anurak commanded. “We should shift now,” he added.
